Improvement....

I took another break for a few weeks and then i came back to the game determined to do better. I had discovered through the reading of the WPT magazine that there were books out there that might help. I was dubious but i thought i'd give it a go. The WPT magazine does a piece each month on how to play certain hands like KK for example and there is always a spot on how Doyle says to play it and quotes his book. I wandered into WHSmiths and found a copy of Super System by Doyle Brunson, it seemed like the place to start. There was only one section of it devoted to Texas Hold 'em but it was good and i felt bouyed with confidence and knowledge of how to play now.

I began playing again and noticed an improvement almost immediately. I started winning and cashing in the two table $6 tournys on the Tribeca network. I still found great difficulty in getting anywhere in the big MTT's though. I always seemed to be shortstacked and virtually blinded away long before the money.

I felt it was time, nonetheless, to try my hand in a casino and set upon visiting the new Aspres casino in Newcastle to put my new knowledge to the test. It was a £20 re-buy tourny with 3 re-buys allowed in the fisrt hour and an add-on at the end of that if you hadn't used ur 3 already.

I played tight and won the first pot i entered into. i bet hard and ended up all in and doubled up. I was quite nervous and keen not to get anything wrong in terms of how the game work, like playingout of turn or looking a fool. It seems silly now as that shouldn't have any bearing on how you play, but it did. Anyway i enjoyed the experience apart and used all my re-buys finishing 33rd out of 65. Not a bad first effort i think. There was one incident that did annoy me though. I was sat left of a middle aged balding man called John who was a bit full of himself. At the end of the re-buy period my stack had depleted and i was sat on a flush draw. I called his raise on the flop and called his all-in on the turn thinking i'd either double up and then get my last add on or i would go bust and get a re-buy and my last add on. I lost to his aces and duely made my re-buy and went to the toilet in the break. Whilst in the loo this John came in and saying hello to a mate of his promptly began telling a story of my last hand and the prat who called his aces with the flush draw. I almost hit the man and only didn't due to my desire to bust him out of the tourny. Sadly this did not happen and instead i was eventually busted by him as i went all in as a short stack with 55 and he was again holding AA.

I left a bit confused about the hand he had mocked me over. Being new to poker i wondered if i had played it poorly.
