This is far too serious.....but lets begin!

I first discovered poker about 6 months ago whilst travelling round Australia in my year out. A few small encounters got me curious.

The first was on Fraser island, off the west coast of Australia, where i met a fellow traveller who during the course of conversaton told me that he had quit his job and now played internet poker for a living. Naturally i was dubious and i paid little attention.

Then at the end of August the newspapers in Australia were full of stories about Joe Hachem having just become world champion and scooping $7.5 million. These stories i read with great curiosity but put it to the back of my mind.

I tried working in Australia for a while but soon lost interest and upon wondering into a 24 hr internet cafe in Sydney, down the bottom of George St and whilst browsing the interenet i stumbled across adverts for poker and remembering the two above incidents i decided to have a look.

That decision is either going to prove one of the costliest or one of the best things i have ever done. We shall see.

I first logged on to pacific poker and downloaded the software and began to play. I had a rudimentary understanding of the game and on my 3rd MTT got to the final table of a massive event and came 3rd, pocketing $300 plus. Having decided that this was easy i decided to give this a shot.

Over the course of November i played poker almost everyday for 10 hours plus and soon realised that my initial win was a fluke. I turned away quickly from Pacific Poker because i didn't like the software and i tried a few other sites but eventually settled at Blue Square Poker which is run by the Grosvenor Casino chain in the UK. It subscribes to the Tribeca tables network and has big graphics and an easy bet interface. Exactly the sort of playmobile style that would appeal to me as a beginner. So here i settled.

I began playing the tournaments, mostly STT's at $5 and $10 and the low cost MTT's. I proved a tough grind and i steadily lost money. Over the month i probably spent about $500, which isn't that bad for a full time beginner, i suppose. Playing everyday for 10 hours this is not too bad, but it was still costly.

I soon realised that i needed to guidance and found my way to http://www.poker-strategy.org/ where i found a primer for STT's and MTT's. It proved a good starting block but i was hopeless at applying the discipline needed to make the advice function. Like most beginners i was an action junkie and thought that if i wasn't betting, i wasn't playing right. i still had lots to learn.

I left poker, mystified after a month but determined to return.
